This event has ended.

The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) invites you to attend the opening reception for The Economy of Food, which will be on view Wednesday June 3rd through Saturday June 20th, 2015 at BRAC’s temporary gallery space at 305 East 140th St. Bronx, N.Y. This is the third of an extensive two-year production of ten exhibitions that will run through 2016, collectively called Food Systems, Surroundings & Sensibilities.

The Economy of Food analyzes the economics of the food system, the complex operation sustaining our lives, from farm or factory to our kitchen table. The exhibition addresses the economies of food production, trade and food distribution, food consumption, and recycling the system’s aftermath. Artists participating in the exhibition are responding to this universal issue with installations, photography, performance and video works, raising questions on issues such as corporate vs. sustainable farming, local food distribution in the Bronx, the new geopolitics of food, multinational food culture, commercial and creative recycling of food waste and packaging, and attempts to balance low budgets while providing nutrition and feeding our families in “the hungriest borough in NYC”.

Curated by Irina Danilova, The Economy of Food is part of BRAC’s larger curatorial effort to draw attention to food as a creative medium, muse and indicator of culture; and to highlight social and political issues, especially those impacting the Bronx community. It features artists Jonathan Blaustein, Michele Brody, Alberto Bursztyn, Project 59, Andrea Callard, Nicolas Dumit Estevez, Martine Fougeron, Lisa Hein, Ian Trask, and Chee Wang Ng.
