Evans’ scenic subject matter - panoramic landscapes and seascapes - belies a deep commitment to abstraction. The botanic gardens allow Evans to balance compositions in new terms and without the rules of gravity. Evans breaks apart the picture plane, flattening the surfaces and layering crisp shapes with modulated hues. A pool of water might become a bolt of ridged grey. A group of lily pads turn into a purple rectangle topped by a series of loosely drawn forms. Evans states, “I visualize the world as a series of collages made of natural forms and concrete structures. In these paintings, I take apart each image and re-image the parts.”
