This event has ended.

In Katherine Daniels’ second solo show at Station Independent Projects she combines elements of painting, sculpture and craft into sensual abstractions in which the sense of touch and the materials utilized are equal components. In a suite of white lattice grid paintings, the artist creates a fenced-in middle ground where vivid, colorful circles float and pulsate within dark canvases. Material Abstractions includes several meticulously constructed large and small ribbon weavings that, combined with the lattice paintings, highlight the artist’s exploration of color, form, composition and materials into multimedia works.

Daniels’ compositional components include diverse materials such as deer netting from earlier large-scale fence weaving commissions and from the artist’s beaded sculptural installations. The hand-sewn works start with a grid formed by netting and fencing; Daniels then weaves broad ribbons into the grids, creating horizontal and linear compositions that are then appliquéd with beads and narrow ribbons. Daniels’ works are layered and tactile compositions that invite viewers to take pleasure in the act of viewing, leaving them free to experience the work on their own terms.

Katherine Daniels has been awarded a Puffin Foundation Grant, a Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award for Public Art, and two Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Manhattan Creative Communities Grants, all for the creation of site-specific installations throughout New York City. She has received studio grants from Chashama, PS.122, the Henry Street Settlement, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. Daniels was selected as a participant in Artist in the Market Place (AIM) at the Bronx Museum and was the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowship in Painting. She holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Johnson State College.
