This event has ended.

SOPHIE KLAFTER is a photographer who has spent the past three years creating a series of portraits of people with physical differences and limitations. Ms. Klafter was born with a neuromuscular disorder herself. Her photographs portray the strength it takes to get through life with an “imperfect” body. She believes that these people are too often misjudged solely by their appearance; being ignored, or even worse, seen as spectacles. Through her art she hopes to make those who are able-bodied more comfortable with and compassionate towards those with differences. Klafter’s intimate portraits, printed on a large scale, are accompanied by text about her subjects, giving life to their personalities and their true stories of capability and perseverance. The artist’s goal is to give the viewer the experience of their corpoReality.

corpoReality has won the Tierney Fellowship and The VSA Emerging Artist Award – currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
