This event has ended.

The Salena Gallery at LIU, Brooklyn presents TileMasters, an exhibition of work of Robert Otto Epstein and Robert Hickman. The use of tile is the link between the artwork of these two artists. Hickman hand cuts plate glass into tiny pieces that are arranged to create patterns; Epstein starts with a grid and hand paints small squares using house paint. ROE’s pictures are created from color, whereas Hickman’s marks are the grouted gaps between the clear tiles.

Both are influenced by traditional pavement and textile patterns and employ obsessive, labor-intensive techniques to create their works. Starting from computer drawn plans, the artists carefully consider various standards of tile dimensions, the smaller being considerably more labor intensive, but yielding greater detail.

Epstein uses a color pallet and paints by numbers, whereas Hickman’s work is largely absent of color and he arranges shapes. Hickman uses a sculptural process: his pieces have weight, and sit away from the wall employing transparency to reveal materiality and manipulate light. The surfaces of his work have relief, whereas Epstein’s colorful paintings are composed directly onto paper or wood supports. Epstein’s paintings are vivid whereas Hickman’s sculptures are subtle.

Their use of common construction materials, commitment to hand-crafted technique, and a shared sensibility join the art of Robert Hickman and Robert Otto Epstein.
