This event has ended.

The intangible and physical forces that shape our planet foster many questions that remain unanswered. Although Man attempts to find a scientific underpinning in his search for explanations, many are validated in part through faith, be it religious, philosophical or mystical. Andrew Erdos: Invaluable, is the artist’s investigation into these constructs and the conceptual departure point for his new work, which is realized through sculpture and photography.

Erdos’ search began in the desert southwest at the mystical four corners of the Navajo Nation. The artist sought out the 25 million year old monolithic Shiprock. A geological anomaly, this mountain formation is a sacred symbol of mythology for cultures both ancient and present. Mountain, a site specific sculpture that rises from the floor as if forced by tectonic energy, is the tangible result of his elusory experiences at that desert site. The work is lit from within, and made by layering broken glass and other silica based detritus that Erdos collected from the land surrounding Shiprock. Installed with ample room for visitors to circle it, it is the artist’s intent that the viewer becomes an active element of the work. “I want to create an experience that people from a wide spectrum of cultures, ages and life experiences can look at, relate to, and connect with on a simple basic and unspoken level.”

Standing beside Mountain, like a sentinel, is Edenquest for Light, a two way mirror glass vitrine that contains a creature of indeterminate lineage or perhaps some future outcome of natural selection. Wearing a disarmingly humorous expression, he marches through time eternal. The artist creates the sculpture from mouth blown glass that is then hand lined with sterling silver. The reflections of the animal and his surrounding landscape are echoed back on the observer in an eternal loop.

On the long east wall of the gallery, the viewer is engulfed in a spectacular expanse of 32 sumptuous photographs, taken throughout the artist’s 18 month exploration of the desert and it’s mysteries. The images are luscious, breath-taking and thought provoking. Are we looking at the geological beginnings of time, or the abandoned skyline of a dystopic future? Invaluable is Andrew Erdos second solo exhibition with Claire Oliver, and a continuation of his ongoing endeavor to create visual metaphors for the complex and enigmatic postulates of time, physics and faith.
