On January 6, Jessica Segall will begin work on ½ a cord as part of Recess’s signature program, Session. Session invites artists to use Recess’s public space as studio, exhibition venue and grounds for experimentation.

Jessica Segall’s installation at Recess involves a very simple task rendered complicated in New York City. During the installation, Jessica will be tending to a small fire in the center of the gallery. Visitors are welcome to stay, warm up and engage in conversation for any period of time. There is no formal behavior aside from general campsite rules.

Campsite rules:
Camp only in designated campsites.
Solicitation or selling any item is strictly prohibited.
Do not disturb the magic fox.
Generators are prohibited.
Littering or discharging sewage or gray water on the ground is prohibited. Please use restrooms.
The use of electrical insect-killing devices is prohibited.
The discharging of firearms, BB guns, paintball guns, bow and arrows, sling shots or any devices that use burning powder, explosives, compressed gases, etc. is prohibited.
As a courtesy to other visitors, it is recommended you bring no more than two dogs per campsite.
No person shall possess fireworks.
No person shall intentionally expose themselves in a lewd manner.
No person shall engage in fighting or violent, tumultuous or threatening behavior; or engage in any other activity which violates the Penal Law.
No person shall possess firearms except during the spring and fall hunting seasons.
Ghost stories and live music are encouraged after 6 pm.

Jessica Segall is a multidisciplinary artist living in New York City. With a mix of humor and elbow grease, her work investigates the link between creativity and survival; engaging current cultural attitudes towards adaptation. Segall’s work has been exhibited at the 10th Havana Bienal, The National Gallery of Indonesia, The Queens Museum of Art, the Aldrich Museum, The Inside Out Museum in Beijing and The National Modern Art Gallery of Mongolia. She is the recipient of grants including Art Matters, the Leighton International Artist Exchange Program, an Arts and Science grant from Chicago University and The Gatsby Charitable Foundation. Jessica attended artist residencies at Skowhegan, The MacDowell Colony, Sculpture Space, Kuenstledorf Schoppingen, Art OMI, Bemis, SOMA, Triangle Arts and Socrates Sculpture Park. She is a graduate of Bard College and received her MFA from Columbia University. Jessica is a current AIRspace resident at Abrons Art Center. www.jessicasegall.com
