David Benrimon Fine Art presents a solo exhibition of Andy Warhol’s work in their state-of-the-art gallery located in the Crown Building, 730 Fifth Avenue. The exhibition will dive deep into Warhol’s experimentation with fame through a carefully selected body of works revealing his own exploration of famous identities to mythical characters and heroes.

Arguably the most iconic artist and creator of his era, Andy Warhol transformed the landscape of contemporary art. He led the pop art movement by challenging preconceived notions about the nature of art and erasing traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. He further pushed these boundaries by employing production techniques that allowed his “Factory” to produce in mass quantities to better reflect society’s dependence on consumerism.

Warhol’s ideals ignited a revolution in the art scene in the late 1950s. By the 70s, Warhol’s oeuvre focused more on symbolism and fame than consumerism, death and disaster. His fetish with celebrity icons resurfaced in 1975 with ‘bad-boy’ images that Warhol took himself of the enigmatic Mick Jagger. In this series, he portrays Mick Jagger in ten different poses rather than a single frontal portrait, as he had done with Marilyn, 1967 and Mao, 1972. Warhol incorporates different blocks of shaped color throughout this series that give the appearance of a collage-like surface. This hybrid of non-representational art coupled with various poses and layers of color lends to a refined, expressive Warhol.

Throughout Warhol’s career he demonstrated an unerring sense for working with images that seem to stay relevant with time. His art is instantly recognizable and exceptionally powerful. In Myths, Warhol’s 1981 portfolio of 10 screenprints, he refers to the early days of cinema and imaginary characters revered by millions all over the world. We are exhibiting the Trial Proofs to provide an additional layer of experimentation through use of colors different to the regular series. Included in the series are characters from old Hollywood films and 1950s TV such as Superman, Howdy Doody and Mickey Mouse.

This exhibition follows the gallery’s critically acclaimed presence in the Warhol market for over 35 years. This exhibition has been curated by Rony More and is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue.
