Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings presents the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window: Cristina Camacho, Dissections.
Dissections is composed of five individual stretched canvases that have been painted, cut, and juxtaposed by Cristina Camacho. Through a dual method of construction and deconstruction, Camacho created a work that straddles painting and sculpture, depending on how you look at it: the front window presents a complex, but coherent image in the vein of geometric abstraction, while the side window reveals a cross-section of the structure, exposing the interaction of the individual layers as a kind of kaleidoscope of shifting colors and shadows. Camacho’s creative process begins with a vague idea of a person, place, or thing. From the first cut of canvas, she is in conversation with the work, until she reveals what has always existed somewhere outside of herself, and within the material. For Dissections, she began with the notion of an exotic creature from the imagined site of Weem, hidden in an untouched portion of the Amazon Rainforest. Like a scientist examining a specimen, she dissected the five layers until she recognized this mysterious creature.

Cristina Camacho (b. 1987) was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. She received her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2015 and BFA in Design and Fine Arts from the Universidad de los Andes. She also studied at the School of Visual Arts, NYU, and the Art Students League and completed a Fine Arts Certificate from Parsons in 2012. Recent exhibitions of her work include Spectral Haze Event Horizon, Blackston Gallery and New Work, New York, St. Nicks Alliance and Arts@Renaissance. She currently lives and works in New York.
