Scandinavian fine art venture Nordic Artwork presents Polar Opposites, a unique exhibition that features artwork from the northern and southern hemispheres that capture the special beauty of the Polar Regions. The photographs by Daniel Kordan of Moscow, and landscape paintings and photographs by Christina Kjelsmark will be interspersed with images from Chasing Ice, an award-winning documentary film by James Balog and Jeff Orlowski.

Landscapes in the polar and sub-polar zones both north and south are stunning and harsh. People have been living above 60 degrees north —the Nordic lands— for thousands of years, whereas Patagonia has only been inhabited since 1865.

Living in these arduous regions exaggerates one’s interaction with nature. The lives of the first inhabitants depended heavily on the climate, and, even to this day, people in these desolate lands are highly aware of shifting weather and wind. People on both ends of the globe are welcoming alternative energy sources, knowing that nature’s power is strong and dependable.

“Art communities at both poles are influenced by the striking landscapes. It is a huge challenge to paint these beautiful landscapes, and at the same time, do them justice to show their uniqueness and strength,” said Kirsten Wildfang, co-founder of Nordic Artwork. “With this exhibition we are trying to show our connectedness despite the thousands of miles separating us. We want to address the concern for climate affecting the people living at the poles, by focusing on their dependence on nature’s unpredictability.”

Nordic Artwork was created by Kirsten Wildfang and Tine Kryger, each a Danish expatriate in New York, as a way for individuals and businesses to collect high-quality Scandinavian art in an easily accessible way. Nordic Artwork currently represents nine artists who have been selected for their craftsmanship and international appeal. They come from a tradition of Scandinavian painters where clean lines, expert painterly technique and a distinctive light has long been known in the work of Vilhelm Hammershøj, Edvard Munch and the Skagen painters.
