This event has ended.

Ginny Fox’s Intimate Universe envelops viewers in a choreography of color, light and texture. Her exhibition, on view at SOHO20 through June 20, pushes this physicality, and the conceptual intentions of her acrylic multi panel paintings, further into a realm of spiritual curiosity and contemplation.

Fox’s paintings provoke a visual interplay of formal elements, catalyzed by a distinct process of repetition and reduction, layering and refrain. Her hand is evident in her technique, and she eschews the traditional paintbrush for rags in order to build a distinct textural surface. Multiple thin layers are applied, rubbed and removed with different force and degrees. These cool fields of seemingly flat gestures begin to visually pulse; monochromatic surfaces are animated with a quality of luminescence, inviting light to enter the perceptual experience.

As though extracted from a bigger piece of a cosmic puzzle, Fox’s work expands to act as a lens through which to view our universe on scales of varying magnitude— acknowledging the mundane, the philosophical and the sublime, from a grain of wood to a pale blue sky. She mines patterns found in nature, emphasizing color palettes referencing the classical elements, in sensory reference to earthly and celestial geographies. Additionally, her paintings can be oriented in any direction on a plane, horizontal or vertical. This potential for variation acknowledges that these works are not stagnant. Rather, they are constantly evolving and adapting, and, in symphony with a grander narrative, forming an interdependent whole.
