This event has ended.

Melissa Staiger’s Push with the Tide is a solo exhibition at Trestle Projects, curated by Trestle Gallery’s Chief Curator Katerina Lanfranco.

Hundreds of paper and painted circles in different colors percolate through the surface of the images as the figure-ground relationship in these works pushes back and forth like the ebb and flow of a tide. Works on paper are displayed in a site-specific manner that activate the unique architecture of Trestle Projects’ exhibition space. Panels with textured relief, incised lines, and found objects introduce a three-dimensionality and deeper inquiry by the artist into her exploration of the circle as material, form, and metaphor.

“Moving paint around is a sensual experience for me,” Staiger explains.
“The marks that I make in the form of bands and waves are painted to express a constant state of flow.”

Sacred geometry, esoteric anatomy, and elemental energy find a minimalist visual language in Staiger’s paintings and works on paper. Her direct use of media presents the viewer with an aesthetic experience where the meditative patterning of circular motifs vibrate against restrained color field backgrounds. Riding the current of her creative research, Staiger’s studio practice pivots on geometric forms, and this body of work explores the structure and symbolism of circles with methodical focus.
