IAM Gallery presents the solo exhibition of Kenjiro Kitade: Candy.

Kitade studied ceramics at New York University, and has been an active ceramic sculptor ever since he graduated. The exhibition showcases exceptional selection of his recent works, including the “Desire” series. Inspired by conversations among a group of wealthy people he had seen on TV, Kitade created unique characters shaped like obese toddlers with winkled, elderly skin, unintentionally paying homage to the animation style of the legendary eighties Japanese anime Akira. The exhibition’s centerpiece, Candy, is a colorful, monstrous TV set that screams ironic messages against the current mass media.

“By working in clay, I have been able to explore significant issues about our antonymic existence,” says Kitade. While embodying his views on current politics and social issues, Kitade’s pitch-perfect ceramic sculptures can also be simply enjoyed as mesmerizing objects made by a craftsman who likes to lose himself with creating with his hands.

Born in Tokyo in 1977, Kitade moved to the U.S. when he was 13 years old. A creative and artistically inclined child, he later received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at New York University, where he studied ceramics. A year after graduating, Kitade established an international reputation by first winning the bronze at the World Ceramic Exposition in South Korea, and later by showcasing his work at the highly selective SOFA (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) show in Chicago. He has had solo shows in New York and Tokyo, and has been included in numerous group shows.
