This event has ended.

The Tibor de Nagy Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings on paper by Susan Jane Walp. It will be the first time the works on paper will be exhibited as an independent body of work. The artist is greatly admired for her intimate (rarely larger than a foot square), intensely observed still life paintings.

Working on paper instead of linen encourages spontaneity and improvisation. Unlike a stretched canvas, the dimensions aren’t fixed and the artist can make decisions in the process. While the artist’s paintings take time, her works on paper come more quickly.

The still lifes are painted close at hand and very directly, taking in carefully arranged objects: flowers, bowls, fruit, vases. Although the compositions are meticulously considered and the painted, muted surfaces worked, the paintings have an air of casual intimacy.

Susan Jane Walp attended Mount Holyoke College and the Brooklyn College MFA program. She continued her studies at the New York Studio School and at Skowhegan. Walp has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a fellowship from the New York Creative Arts Public Service Program. This is her fifth exhibition with the Tibor de Nagy Gallery.
