“Coal For Wine” Exhibition

Brennan & Griffin presents Coal For Wine, an exhibition curated by Nicholas Irzyk.
The goods itemized in the exhibition’s title are compressions of time and locale. Used metabolically, they rely on human intervention to be transformed into consumable objects. Through modes of painting and sculpture, the works in the exhibition explore the potency of material both raw and repurposed. Culled from bucolic terrain, archived printed material, and bric-a-brac, the artists dislodge these elements into discrete abstract forms.
Peter Acheson was born in Washington, D.C. and lives and works in Ghent, New York. Solo exhibitions include Novella Gallery, NYC (2013), John Davis Gallery NYC (2010), and Elizabeth Harris Galley, NYC (2007). Recent group exhibitions include Thompson/Giroux Gallery, Chatham, NY (2014), Valley Variety, Hudson, NY (2014) and Steven Harvey Fine Art NYC (2013).
Cheryl Donegan was born in New Haven, CT and lives and works in New York city. Donegan has had solo exhibitions at Sgorbati Projects, NYC (2015), David Shelton Gallery, Houston, TX (2014), Galerie VidalCuglietta, Brussels, and White Projects, St. Louis, MO, (2013). Recent projects include a collaborative performance with Print All Over Me and Richard Haines curated by Sam Gordon, presented at the NADA Art Fair, NYC (2015).
Geoffrey Farmer lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. Recent solo exhibitions include the Vancouver Art Gallery (2015), Casey Kaplan, NYC (2014), Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2014), Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany (2014), Perez Art Museum, Miami FL (2014), and Catriona Jeffries, Vancouver (2014), Migros Museum, Zurich (2013/2014), Barbican, London (2013), Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples (2013), and Mercer Union, Toronto.
Vlad Smolkin was born in Kiev, Ukraine and lives and works in Queens, New York. Recent exhibitions include: Elastic de facto, curated by Picture Menu, Carter & Citizen Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2013); Dinner, in collaboration with Troy Hagenbart and Susan Gargiulo, Fountain, Brooklyn, NY (2013); The Show, curated by Nigel Rolfe and Holly Morrison, White Box Gallery, NYC (2013); Atheist Icons, MFA Thesis Exhibition, Anderson Gallery, Richmond, VA (2012). His work is included in the Rozovsky Collection, Boston, MA.
Laurel Sparks was born in Phoenix, AZ and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Sparks has exhibited in major galleries and museums including D’Amelio Terras (NYC) Dodge Gallery (NYC) the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, CCS Bard Hessel Museum (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY) Howard Yezerski Gallery (Boston) DeCordova Museum (Lincoln, MA) and Art in General (NYC). Awards include two New American Paintings publications, Elaine DeKooning Fellowship, SMFA Traveling Fellowship, Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant, Berkshire Taconic Fellowship, and a Boston Cultural council Grant. Sparks was a 2013 Fire Island Artist Resident and 2014 Fellow at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop at Elizabeth Foundation NYC. Her work was recently published in Art21 Magazine and Vogue Mexico. Forthcoming exhibitions include group shows at Brennan and Griffin Gallery (NYC) Berman Museum at Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA) and Elizabeth Foundation Gallery (NYC).
