This event has ended.

The Moulthrop family has made lathe-turned wood vessels over three generations – Ed (1916-2003), Philip (1947) and Matt (1977). Their timeless, modernist forms derive richness from impeccable craftsmanship and their deep knowledge of the material.

The wood they use is sourced from trees salvaged in the Southeast of the United States, where the Moulthrops have lived for almost 60 years. Fellow woodworker and family friend, former President Jimmy Carter, said that ‘the artistry of Ed Moulthrop has been inherited – and perhaps enhanced – by his son Philip and his grandson Matt.’ In their hands turning reveals the wood’s age markings and flaws, and yields abstract patterns and drawings. A laborious finishing process gives them sensuous, glass-like surfaces, which invite touch. They find the sublime in the seemingly simple wooden bowl.

Heller Gallery has represented the Moulthrop family through three generations and 29 years - since Ed’s first exhibition at Heller in 1986. Today their work resides in prestigious museums and private collections around the world.
