Air Circulation presents Buccaneer, Masquerade, Suspense; Abundance, Thorn, Champion, an exhibition of new works by Brice Brown. This multi-part, site-specific installation presents a fragmented experience of the still life genre as a way to explore the dichotomous impulses inherent in the act of domestication: containment and freedom; restraint and release; a need for chaos and a need for order. Using The Batsford Colouor Book of Roses (1962) and pages from an early 20th century fruit seed catalogue as source material for an almost overwhelming array of archival pigment prints, wallpaper design, and soft sculpture, Brown radically remixes and jams together images to create layered works which are arranged around the gallery in a controlled yet improvisational way reinforcing the tension that occurs when something wild is being corralled. Embedded in the composition of most of these works are references to the letterhead design of the Constructivist-influenced masters of design such as Piet Zwart and Henyrk Berlewi. Though this, Brown draws an analogy between the attempt to wrestle language into an orderly system with the attempt to domesticate, and suggests the possibility experiencing still life as language.

Brice Brown was born in Louisville, KY, and currently lives in New York City. He received a BA from Dartmouth College and an MFA from Pratt Institute, and has also studied at the Chautauqua School of Art. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Artnews, artcritical and The Village Voice, among others. He has held residencies at Yaddo, Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Vermont Studio Center, and has been a visiting artist/lecturer at Dartmouth College, Carnegie Mellon University, Williams College and Drew University. His work in public collections include the International Collage Center at Mount Holyoak College, Speed Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Swope Art Museum, and Yale University. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include installations at Margaret Thatcher Projects, New York, a site-specific public installation at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and he will have works on view in the Chautuaqua Institute Sculpture Garden. From 2006-2010 Brown founded and edited, with Trevor Winkfield, The Sienese Shredder, an annual arts journal bringing together visual arts, poetry and fiction. He is currently co-editing another arts journal with Winkfield, titled Tether, which will launch in May 2015.
