This event has ended.

Howard Scott Gallery presents it’s seventh solo exhibition of works by the German painter Werner Schmidt, entitled Time in Color.

Although one cannot see any recognizable objects in his paintings at a first glance, the artist would not
call these works abstract. Layers upon layers of special self-made, natural paint gradually bloom in front
of the spectator’s eyes.

These recent works accentuate small, one-note gestures, like a simple diagonal line or a short, fat
horizontal brushstroke. These gestures float through clearly developed color spaces, creating
contradictory perspectives of time.

Schmidt moves his abstractions further away from his observation of the external visual world. His single
panel canvases contain less broad, sweeping strokes and are less bound to the landscape. These
contain a more existential form of liberation. There is freshness and fullness of a new pictorial space. The
residue of paint that slices through the thinly-opaque area on the top and sides give evidence of a
painterly process; yet, the work is less about process, than it is about endurance and insight.

These paintings hang like pictures on a wall, motionless and solitary for years.

Werner Schmidt was born in the Black Forest region of Southwestern Germany in 1953. For the past
several years, he has divided his time between studios in the towns of Oberkirch and Berlin. His work is
in numerous collections in Europe and the United States.
