This event has ended.

“What is Antideterminism or New Blue Bunny Snorkeling” curated by Marina Reiter Matthews features artwork by German artist Eckhard Besuden and Studio 26 Gallery artists: Jay Friedenberg, Chandle Lee, Maidy Morhous, Bernie Segal, Robert Labor and others.

David Salle argues that the historically Determinist phrase “painting is dead” has itself expired. In our day and age artists believe that it is no longer relevant to spend so much energy defending one’s decision to paint. The troubled principles of evaluating art from the perspective of “new”, “unique”, and “anti-decorative” have been doing nothing more than suppressing creativity.
Eckhard Besuden and Studio 26 Gallery artists use humor and irony juxtaposing motifs and techniques; they are cross-referencing different time periods in art history and colliding them together. The artists are not trying to create just in order to be different. They create from the heart what matters to them most. And to quote David Salle again: “For those who make paintings, or who find in them a compass point, this is a time of enormous vitality.”
