This event has ended.

The Directors of Marlborough Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by Michele Oka Doner, which will be curated by Todd Levin. An internationally acclaimed artist whose prolific career spans four decades, Oka Doner is inspired by a lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world from which she derives her formal vocabulary.

Feasting on Bark will feature Oka Doner’s enigmatic works, including her signature bronze figures, etched glass crystal balls, large wax sculptures, and intricate metal bees. Prominently featured among these works is Corpus Origin, a larger-than-life representation of a rudimentary figure constructed from the roots of a banyan tree. This intriguing work appears at once animated and mummified. Curator and critic Gregory Volk explains: “Oka Doner’s eclectic artworks include large works on paper for which she fashioned recognizably human forms from what she terms ‘organic materials.” Like many of Oka Doner’s works, Corpus Origin conjures a deity or totem that is spiritual and mysterious. Volk describes Oka Doner’s “career-long focus on ushering nature into art, while exploring a rich convergence between the human and the natural world” as meditative and devotional while being at the same time festive, enchanting and joyfully exuberant.
