RARE presents Rush to Fill, Dionisios Fragias’ fourth one-person exhibition at the gallery. The artist’s new sculptures and “hybrid” paintings continue his exploration of humanity’s competing and parallel tendencies toward creation and destruction.
The works in this show focus on a specific area of man’s duality - the propensity to take action and dominate when he senses a void in any sphere of society. Whether the vacuum to be filled allows for the furtherance of a cultural or scientific agenda, or the gap being plugged permits exploitative and abusive uses of power, Fragias suggestively presents both sides of the same coin.

Fragias traces the visceral human compulsion to assume control through nature’s own mimicking mechanics. For example, in the “hybrid” painting titled The Mystical Supper an oil rendering of a pack of wolves swarming a picnic spread left unattended by humans is superimposed over an aluminium silhouette of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. In the only free-standing sculpture in the show, The Afterparty (Octopus), a tornado and flying debris form the head of an octopus while lines of people and animals, which comprise the tentacles, are unfathomably walking into the tornado’s vortex.

Fragias received his BFA in 1999 from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. In 2014, he exhibited with fellow RARE artist Johnston Foster in a two-person show titled Highbreeds at The Blender Gallery in Athens, Greece. He and Foster, along with Eamon O’Kane, another RARE artist, are currently exhibiting at La MaMa Galleria (NYC) in Nobles & Savages, which runs through May 9. Fragias’ works are in several major collections including those of Dakis Joannou (Athens) and Ephi Gildor (Denver). Over the last 12 years, he has been closely mentored by the artist Jeff Koons.
