NOVELLA presents Danielle Mysliwiec’s solo exhibition “Harbinger,” the artist’s first solo show in New York. In this new body of work, Mysliwiec has taken cues from the natural world and personal events to create a suite of paintings that act as abstract omens. In works such as Crocus and Nocturne, she continues her series of illusory woven oil paintings. Using specialized tools to extrude oil paint in thread-like marks, Mysliwiec works through a systematic process that gradually builds three-dimensional illusions of warp and weft. The process results in mysterious and surprising experiences of this traditional medium. In other works such as Uma, raw and gilded linen are simply gathered or literally woven together to form textured and reflective geometric compositions that pare down and further probe the material possibilities of painting. Finally works, such as Equinox, fix the viewer in front of fluctuating chevron fields, created by the play of gilded surfaces, subtle color gradients, and Mysliwiec’s meticulously randomized approach to pattern. The combination of the artist’s process and approach to material culminate in abstract visual events rather than fixed painterly images, as the surface of each work shifts with the movement of the viewer and the changing light of the day.

Danielle Mysliwiec was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA from Hunter College. Mysliwiec has exhibited her work in numerous galleries including Vox Populi (Philadelphia), Heiner Contemporary (Washington, DC), Baer Ridgway Exhibitions (San Francisco, CA), and Camel Art Space (Brooklyn, NY) among others. Her work has been featured in publications including Art Fag City, The Washington Post, The New American Paintings Blog, B’more Art, Art Blog Art Blog and The San Francisco Examiner. She has contributed as a writer to the Brooklyn Rail and was awarded a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center in January 2014.
