City Bird Gallery presents Look at the Moon a solo exhibition of new works by NYC artist Vincent Tiley. Look at the Moon is Vincent Tiley’s first solo show in Manhattan. “Look at the moon” is also the artist’s first full sentence according to his mother. This debut show for the artist features works that exist in between the mediums of painting, sculpture, garment, and performance.

Look at the Moon explores how the gaze and the act of seeing is used not only to understand and objectify our surroundings (including each other) but also how through the act of seeing we can pick up on visual emotional cues that remind us we are not alone. Clothing is used metaphorically throughout the show as it suggests the body of other people, the histories of its use, its ability to tell stories, and how it can conceal and reveal both physical and personal aspects of its wearer to those around them. The artist has collaged garments, furniture, images, and text from his past to make new paintings, sculptures, and performances.

The artist makes “paintings” by stretching painted fabric across upholstered foam forms that are evocative of body parts or by painting directly on pre-existing clothes such as winter jackets and jean shorts. Vincent Tiley also sews body suits that restrain and support the position of the wearer providing the viewer with a lush painterly and sculptural display that must be endured by the wearer for the duration of the performance. Small fidgety movements and measured breathing remind the viewer of the person inside this unchoreographed sculptural performance. His newest performance Sleepyhead Sweetie in which a performer will be attached to a defective painted air mattress will be performed at both the opening and closing reception for the show.

Vincent’s work draws on queer youth culture, nightlife, and modernist art history using materials and forms from drag, fashion, fetish, and abstract painting and sculpture. From this he builds objects of obsession that implicate their viewer as voyeur or potential performer. From his practice new sculptural and painterly bodies emerge speaking a visual language of display, concealment, and touch.
