This event has ended.

As we were finalizing the last details for our exhibition Circle of Fire back in December of last year, the top floor of the gallery went up in flames! Fortunately the fire department got there quickly and no people came to harm – the building though, was drowned by the fire hoses. Now, two months later, the gallery has dried up and the fire is back – The Circle of Fire:

Circle of Fire, a show of paintings with esoteric content, unites four representational artists from far away (Iran, Denmark, Afghanistan and Norway), as well as an American musician based in Berlin. Part of a nomadic tribe of artists traveling the world, the lot meets up in various cities across the globe for creative collaborations.

Fostering an international network of artists is at the very core of NOoSPHERE Arts’ mission, as reflected in our name: the noosphere (pronounced “know-oh-sphere”) means the “sphere of human thought”, or the collective consciousness of our species. It is a stage of evolutionary development dominated by the mind and interpersonal relationships. Constituted by human interaction and cultural production, the noosphere is a constantly expanding web of connections encircling the Earth’s biosphere; a sphere of mind – or circle of fire – encompassing our planet.

KAREN NIKGOL
Born in Tehran in 1983, Nikgol is a painter, gallerist and performance artist based in Oslo. Educated in England and Norway, his work ranges from drawing and painting to curating events, exhibitions and directing stage productions. Nikgol is one of the founding members of the artist-run space NoPlace in Oslo. His body of work always includes an element of mysticism and eroticism, combined with humour and pop-cultural symbolism, mixing all of these into a new, naive and colorful expressionism with references to pre-war paintings from Northern and Southern Europe. His work has been shown all over Europe and the United States. Recent group shows include Black Market in Berlin, Terminators at Transformer gallery in Washington, Worlds Apart in London and The City is Empty at the Kronika Museum in The Czech Republic. Nikgol is currently working towards painting exhibitions in Denmark, Norway and Italy, plus a grandiose stage production based on the ancient book Satyricon by Petronius.

PETER MAX-JAKOBSEN
Born in Aalborg in 1973, the artist lives and works in Hjørring, Denmark. Following his 2002 graduation from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and the Royal Conservatory (KC) in The Hague, Netherlands, Max-Jakobsen taught material experimentation and sketching methods at KABK for three years. At the same time, in tandem with his practice as a classically-trained painter, Max-Jakobsen was involved in the emerging scene of Live Cinema, where groups or individual performers interact with home-built electronic devices. Under the name of EX PMX, he performed in galleries as well as at film, music and art festivals in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, including The International Film Festival in Rotterdam (2001); Transmediale in Berlin (2003); and The Roskilde Festival (2006). His artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and the US, and is represented in several public collections, such as the Vendsyssel Museum of Art, Denmark.

KAIKAOSS
Based in Germany since 1991, Kaikaoss was born in 1965 in Kabul, where he received his first artistic training. He completed his fine arts studies in Minsk, Belarus, where he was schooled in drawing and painting. This academic education, combined with the artistic experiences he had in Europe, allowed him to develop his own distinctive style. His works are represented in several collections internationally. He has exhibited extensively and conducted artistic actions throughout Europe as well as in the US and Asia. Recent exhibits include shows at the Phantastenmuseum in Vienna, the Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich, Museum Kronberger and the International Salon d’Automne in Paris.

SOL KJØK

An avid drawer all her life, Kjøk’s work has been featured in 100+ shows in museums and galleries worldwide. She has taught at universities and lectured at art venues throughout the US. Her work, which originates as performance, is featured in Drawing Essentials (Oxford University Press), a textbook widely used in fine arts programs in the US. A recipient of some 50 awards and artist’s grants, her work is represented in public collections such as the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Nordic Museum of Drawing, and the Osten Museum of Drawing, as well as numerous private and corporate collections throughout the world. Kjøk is the Founding Artistic Director of NOoSPHERE Arts.

KATY GUNN
Based between Berlin and New York, Katy Gunn is a singer and violinist performing her own unique brand of songwriting - a combination of soulful, intimate songs fusing classical and pop. Using mainly her violin and voice, Katy writes “sarcastically witty, exquisite pop”, as quoted from her CD Baby review. She was most recently awarded ‘Best New Artist’ at the Copenhagen Songwriters Festival (2013), and was featured at the Peel Slowly & See festival (Netherlands) that same year. She is currently part of the duo Teenage Love, her new electro-pop project based in Denmark, which received immediate recognition from Danish National Radio shortly after its first release in August, 2014, alongside festival debuts in Copenhagen.
