This event has ended.

I am attracted to black because of the beauty of the color and its infinite
variety. It is a color that has been my inspiration since I began painting.

Jason McCoy Gallery presents a solo exhibition of selected paintings by New York based artist Joan Witek, spanning several decades of the artist’s oeuvre.

Born in New York in 1943, Witek has worked in black and white for decades. While appearing to be simple and easily grasped there is an ongoing language of proportion and meaning in this abstraction for her. Black is usually considered the absence of color: it is severe, rigorous, associated with death, depression or repression. However, as Lilly Wei has pointed out: “Witek plays these oppositions in her work: black being ascetic and alluring, meditative and expressive, flawless and flawed, fierce and demure, a distinct unequivocal presence, yet subtle, elusive.”

Witek has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AR; Birmingham Museum of Art; Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, ME; Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Kendall Campus Art Gallery, Miami-Dade Community College, Miami, FL; Mead Art Museum, Amherst College, Amherst, MA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; MIT-List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Segovia, Spain; Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA; Santa Barbara Museum, Santa Barbara, CA; University Art Museum, UCLA, Santa Barbara, CA; and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT among others. She lives and works in New York City.
