This event has ended.

Jonathan LeVine Gallery will celebrate its tenth anniversary with The Color and the Fury: 10 Years of Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This commemorative group exhibition features limited editions and prints created by artists who have exhibited at the gallery extensively over the last decade, including AJ Fosik, Audrey Kawasaki, Brett Amory, DALeast, Gary Taxali, Jeremy Geddes, Josh Agle (Shag), Parra, Pose and Tara McPherson.

Since 2005, Jonathan LeVine Gallery has been an essential venue for Street Art, ephemeral work placed in public urban environments, and Pop Surrealism, work influenced by illustration, comic book art and pop culture imagery. The ten artists in The Color and the Fury have been influential in shaping the evolution of those genres, as well as the gallery’s programming. After ten years, 186 exhibitions and over 300 exhibiting artists, the gallery remains true to its mission of showing an alternative viewpoint within the New York art market.

Jonathan LeVine began independently curating exhibitions at punk and alternative rock venues in New Jersey and New York in 1994. By promoting visual art forms through group shows at locations that were home to their musical counterparts, such as CBGB, Webster Hall and Max Fish, he gave a home to this nascent art movement. In 2001, LeVine opened his own gallery called Tin Man Alley in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Four years later he renamed and moved the gallery to the epicenter of the contemporary art world, Manhattan’s Chelsea district.

Since its inception, Jonathan LeVine Gallery has had a dedication to the avant-garde, bringing to the forefront underground art with a unique counter-culture point of view. By celebrating its tenth anniversary with an exhibition comprised of limited editions and prints, the gallery continues to lift the limitations imposed upon Post War art while also making it accessible to the general public.
In conjunction with The Color and the Fury, a site-specific installation paying tribute to Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be on view and consist of contributions made by dozens of artists and friends of the gallery, including an original sculpture by Michael Leavitt. In addition, a limited edition zine and other surprises will be revealed at the opening reception.
All limited edition works in The Color and the Fury are based off new works or were specially created for the exhibition, varying in edition and print size. They will be released on February 21, 2015 at the gallery, details will be announced in the weeks leading up to the exhibition opening.

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is committed to new and cutting edge art. Our roots go back to 1995, when Jonathan’s life-long participation in punk and underground music grew into a curatorial experiment with the visual culture that surrounded him. We moved to Chelsea in 2005, with an eye towards honoring and connecting with the history and context of Post War art. We contribute to the dialogue by challenging the conventions of the canon – exploring the terrain of the high/low and everything in between. Jonathan LeVine Gallery is located at 557C West 23rd Street and 529 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011.
