This event has ended.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York present Night Flight, a group exhibition curated by Jackie Hoving and Norm Paris that features the work of Benjamin Degen, Johannes DeYoung, Angela Dufresne, Charlotte Hallberg, Trenton Doyle Hancock, MaryKate Maher, Tom McGrath, Mark Shetabi, and Jude Tallichet.

A precondition of our modern waking life is the onslaught of information and images, infinitely shared. What then occurs in the night? Do you fall asleep to the cool light of the computer screen? Did you dream in 1985, with USA Network droning on the television, in between the jump cuts of Night Flight? What has happened to the grand tradition of Chopin’s and Whistler’s contemplative Nocturnes?

The artists in this exhibition explore the night as a site for anything from private spectacle to poetic wandering. For Benjamin Degen, Angela Dufresne, and Jude Tallichet, the night becomes a theatrical space through which normally hidden thoughts and actions are actualized. Night is a space for desire and action, but it is also a time for subconscious wandering as seen in the dream-like works of Johannes DeYoung and Trenton Doyle Hancock. Tom McGrath and Charlotte Hallberg look outward, towards the landscape and the sky respectively, as a site for evocative and optical painting phenomena. Utilitarian objects become mysterious talismans in the sculptures presented here by Mark Shetabi and MaryKate Maher. Today, the dark is still a time for mystery and reverie – but it is also a place where the complications of daily experience leave an illusory afterimage.
