“When you see everyday objects as creative possibilities, the world becomes a
different place; a place of beauty and whimsy.” –Laurene Krasny Brown

Brian Morris Gallery presents “Sanctuary Of The Square”, an immersive installation of new work by Laurene Krasny Brown in the BMG Project Space. “Sanctuary Of The Square” invites the viewer into a world, albeit a tiny
one, in which to explore the place in all our lives where we go to be royalty.
The forms and materials are limited. There must be rules (to break): paper,
cardboard, wire screening, waxed string and 5” x 5” grids. By submitting to these
self-imposed limitations, Krasny Brown is able to explore endless expressive
possibilities in a number of related guises. Within the borders of the squares, new
rhythms, patterns, colors and shapes emerge like a melodic theme developed
into a series of voices and harmonies.

What if one was to walk around all day with an artwork in their pocket? If the
artworks were just right, one would remember it is there and make decisions
based on its rhythms.

In “Defensive Measures” Krasny Brown finds little joys in the rhythm and
undulations of these cardboard gates, or teeth, or mouths, opening and closing in
harmony and reverberations, ever so slightly in her refined hands.
The Sanctuary is a safe place, removed from the chaos outside, offering
protection and creating an environment in which growth and free expression of
ideas is encouraged. While the act of doing work is important, the necessity for
Krasny Brown is to have fun while doing it.
Krasny Brown’s work can also be seen this summer in the juried group exhibition,
Community of Artists, at the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham MA.
