This event has ended.

Gallery Juno presents a solo exhibition of mixed media paintings by New York based artist Pepe Vives.

“The images captured by Pepe Vives’s gaze are obliquely autobiographical. He uses stories from films to explain moments of his life. The stills from those films reproduce the veracity of an instant, an instant found in the narrow space between two images. A space where there is no room for the voice.

Encounters pierced by gusts of violence that sneak into the inner landscapes of the soul. “All encounters are an act of violation,” explains the artist, referring to the apparent coldness and detachment of the landscapes he seizes in his paintings.

A religious yearning underlines the stories, which are told in silence. A child’s gaze; a fleeting space, fading into darkness; the shape of loneliness; someone observing, from the depth of a shadow, wrapping the defenseless purity of the bare skin. A gaze hiding something mysterious, something we cannot recognize; a cry we cannot hear.

The mystery of the language used by bodies: despair, impending death, traces of ash. Sinister urban landscapes, fresh air beyond the outskirts of the city. The shape of a ship disappearing in the golden twilight. Skyscrapers sinking into the gray skies. The artist has seized these moments and, through them, has created his own alphabet. Yet these works are not about despair—even though traces of pain are recognizable. These bodies approach each other with apprehension because they have no control over what might happen. The image captured in the precise instant before it freezes.”
