This event has ended.

Lyles & King presents an exhibition of Dan Ivic’s paintings spanning 2012 to present. This body of work, Guts (2012-2015), marks his return to art making after a hiatus of nearly ten years during which he left New York to found the seminal artspace Greener Pastures Contemporary Art in Toronto. There, he organized pioneering exhibitions with Joe Bradley, Daniel Hesidence, Andre Ethier, Jonathan Meese, Jason Fox, Huma Bhabha, and others.

In his paintings, Ivic punctuates vigorous gestural abstractions with intensely personal motifs. The visceral energy of the bold paint strokes and gobbed-on collage meets with declarative words scrawled on the canvas or in the titles: “GUTS”, “ALL DEAD”, “PANDORA”, “CRACKED BONES.” The words act as a motif for Ivic to abstract from and function as a gateway to the personal origin of the paintings. The pathos and earnestness of the works are amplified by their large-scale, but complicated by their art historical awareness, self-deprecating humor (see “CHEESEBURGER”, “MOM”), and studied off-handedness. Isolated and focused in a warehouse outside of Toronto, Dan Ivic composed Guts (2012-2015). It’s time to let it out to the world.

Dan Ivic (b. 1974, Toronto, Canada) lives in Toronto, Canada. He has exhibited his work at Andrew Kreps Gallery (solo), Gavin Brown’s Passerby, Cooper Cole, and Derek Eller Gallery.
