This event has ended.

The video works by Jessica Hankey and Erin Colleen Johnson presented in Set Pieces explore the unstable relationship between location, image, and perception. Drawing on strategies of documentary and narrative filmmaking, Johnson and Hankey craft social scenarios that reflect on the ways in which experience is performed and interpreted through the physical space in which it unfolds. In the video, Hole (2013), Johnson stretches the limits of “being there” as she sits in a cardboard box in Oakland, CA guided through the darkhouse ice fishing process by an expert in Minnesota. In Come in (2012) Johnson contrasts the physical spaces of contemporary users of Morse Code- retired telegraph operators and Spiritualist mediums connecting people with the dead- as they transmit and receive disembodied messages. The pursuit of site as an authentic source of history and identity serves as the backdrop for Jessica Hankey’s multi-channel video Women’s Club 2 (2014). Returning to the women’s organization she has worked with for years, this work considers how the dormant stage at the center of their hundred-year old clubhouse may function as a setting for personal and institutional transformation.
