Mark Wiener “Cross Narratives and Other Stories”

chashama Gallery (461 W 126th St.)

This event has ended.

chashama presents an exhibition of collaborative works by three New York artists, Robert Aitchison, Iliyan Ivanov & the late Mark Wiener (1951-2012), “Cross Narratives and Other Stories”.

At the foundation of this exhibition is the notion that while painting is an individual pursuit, there is room for an extended dialogue in the actual process. The presented artworks demonstrate that artists with distinct styles and sensibilities can suspend personal preferences and practices to create work that truly encompasses a collaborative vision. On view will be examples from the ongoing collaboration begun in 2007 between Robert Aitchison and Iliyan Ivanov, as well a 3 x 30 foot paper mural created by Ivanov and Mark Wiener, in a single session, with both artists working simultaneously in charcoal, acrylic and pencil, in 2007.

Robert Aitchison’s paintings and drawings explore the landscapes of wilderness and urban environments. In his work Aitchison is attracted to overlooked spaces on the periphery of daily routines that resonate with contemplative character. Aitchison was raised in Texas and moved to NYC in 1998. He has exhibited in the U.S., Europe, and South America. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.

A native of Bulgaria, Iliyan Ivanov received his fine arts training under the mentorship of internationally recognized painter George Yanakiev. Since coming to the US in 1994, Iliyan continued to explore and challenge the modalities of painting, drawing and mixed media, showing his work in numerous group and solo exhibition in NYC, the US and Europe. Regardless of medium and scale, Ivanov develops his ideas in thematically related series meant to challenge the observer’s own creativity. www.rikka-arts.com

Mark Wiener (1951-2012) studied under Bauhaus influences at Philadelphia College of Art, where he focused on painting and photography. Driven by the ideas of visionaries Alexi Brodivitch, Frank Zachry and Alexander Lieberman, he developed an open mind toward working in simultaneously in several disciplines. His final series – Cross Narratives and Street Markings – were inspired by the urban landscape and informed by his experience in the darkroom. http://mwienerarts.com
