Littlejohn Contemporary presents “New Work”, an exhibition of paintings by New York artist, Annette Davidek. In Gallery B, New York artist Sarah Hinckley will exhibit new watercolors and paintings. The exhibition will run from September 1st through October 3rd, 2015

Annette Davidek’s new series of paintings were inspired in part by her recent travel to Japan, and influences such as Japanese textiles and embroideries. While there she visited the Tokyo Imperial Palace Garden and their collection of bonsai trees, which became an additional source of reference in her new paintings.

Davidek’s luminous, colorful paintings elicit a controlled yet lively energy. Her invented floating forms are often derived from organic motifs— roots, branches, coral, and algae—as well as from 19th Century technological illustrations. Her keen sense of color pushes the palette in directions and combinations outside of nature where vibrant hues sit alongside soft pastels, and nearly fluorescent pigment cause elements to pop out. The compositions seem as though they have been suddenly flooded with light to reveal the animated forms within and use repetition to personify the dynamic processes of movement and growth in action.
