“IN SITU: Women Artist in Place” Exhibition
Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning
This event has ended.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning proudly presents an art exhibition featuring ten women artists:
Nicole Awai,
Lenore Brown,
Nina Buxenbaum,
Mildred Borras,
Jacqueline Herranz-Brooks,
Kimberly Mayhorn,
Anh Nguyen,
Alexandria Smith,
André St. Clair, and
Shenna Vaughn.
These artists represent the breadth and depth of diversity in contemporary visual art methods from traditional oil on canvas painting to found object installation. All are working artists, emerging to established, who live and/or work in the New York tri-state area, making art that engages time-honored, as well as time-worn, notions of “a woman’s place.”
Broadly interpreted, but integral to identity formation, encountering one’s “place” as a gender-specific physical or psychological location continues to haunt us as a community and a nation. The artists exhibiting together here reveal that encountering a woman artist in situ is exhilarating and unpredictable.
