Traditional Japanese Beauty Morphs into Jewelry The Nippon Gallery at The Nippon Club is pleased to host the Jewelry exhibition entitled “Traditional Japanese Beauty Morphs into Jewelry” by Michio Koide, who is one of the hottest jewelry designers in Japan. Mr. Koide recently received a great deal of attention as a designer after creating a special pendant for Japan’s First Lady Akie Abe.

Mr. Koide creates jewelry inspired by the national treasures, ancient sculptures, and architecture of world heritage and places a high priority on a manual process. The exhibition consists of jewelry with motifs taken from Ukiyoe ‘DOKURO-ZU’ (skull print) by Kyosai Kawanabe, Ukiyoe Artist from the end of Edo Period through to the early Meiji Period, ‘HIBO KANNON-ZU’ (painting of Avalokitesvara as a merciful mother) by Hogai Kano who was a leading figure of Japanese art world during the early Meiji period,

‘PHOENIX’ by Jakuchu Ito who was described as an eccentric painter in Edo period, ‘TIGER’ by Ganku who was a late Edo period artist. A necklace of a high-heeled shoe in the shape of the Chines Character ‘KOKORO’ (meaning heart) by calligrapher Maki Yoshida, who designed the logo of Kyusu National Museum, and jewelry in the shape of the Chinese Character ‘SO’ (meaning creation) by Kouhei Okamoto, one of the most famous calligraphers in Japan, will also be exhibited.

Mr. Koide creates his jewelry based on the philosophy, “everyone can possess and enjoy world-class works of art when they wear jewelry morphed from artworks with high artistry”.
