Janet Borden, Inc. presents ALFRED LESLIE: 10 MEN.

Ten new large scale portraits, executed in oil pastel on linen canvas by acclaimed painter and filmmaker Alfred Leslie will be shown.

Famous since the 1950s for his abstract and figurative painting, Alfred Leslie has updated his craft for the contemporary age. These paintings further the ideas Leslie began in his Grisaille paintings of 1963. Leslie’s uncanny facility for portraiture in any medium is very much in evidence. He uses multiple planes and vantage points to create these images that are both abstract and specific.

The ten larger- than-life portraits are Sam Francis, Richard Bellamy, Al Held, Allen Ginsberg, Jerome Liebling, Joel Oppenheimer, and Willem de Kooning, as well as three self-portraits. Details of scale and perspective make these drawings so compelling. As a group, they are sentinels.

Leslie is an image-maker. He has invented a unique style of drawing, and his painting explores a compendium of materials, bodies, and expressions. The series will also be shown at The Butler Art Institute, Youngstown, Ohio, in the spring.
