Causey Contemporary presents, Integer Overflow, an exhibition by Marc Brotherton. Below find Mr. Brotherton’s statement on the exhibit.
“The paintings for the exhibition Integer Overflow are a new step forward in the evolution of my work. In an homage to my rebellious side, I continue to use abstraction as a visual language to make paintings with which to engage the viewer. It is abstraction’s rebellious past that I hope to keep alive in my work. I believe that we are now living in a new abstract revolution and I want to be part of it.

I like to challenge the idea of what paintings are made of, both conceptually and materially. I want to explore painting through the use of cast-off shapes and spaces from past abstraction, to create a new space in which to move forward, particularly as if seen in the context of 1980’s video game design. I want to make work that strives to make the world a better place, no matter how naive that may seem. I agree with painter Thomas Nozkowski, and I believe that art has the power to expand consciousness and increase freedom. The title of the show, Integer Overflow, is a term taken from a particular kind of system failure in which a limit has been met, and because of it’s inherent digital limitations it must reset itself to zero to continue.

*A kill screen is the name given to a result of this phenomena that happens in many different arcade video games such as, Donkey Kong or Pac-Man to name a few.
*A kill screen is the highest level that can be achieved.
*A kill screen is a realization of an achievement that represents optimal performance.
*A kill screen is only achieved once a perfect game has been played. The result of such, is
a system error in which undefined behavior results. A failure, game over!
But I don’t want to stop making paintings, I want to keep moving forward. I want to play the
perfect game and reach beyond the highest level because at a certain point one realizes
that the rules of the game don’t apply anymore. I want to create my own integer overflow,
my own “Killskreen.”
*A Killskreen is a realization that there is nothing higher.
*A killskreen is a way to break the rules.
*Integer Overflow is a way to continue past the highest level. Ultimately, it is this higher
level that I want to represent in my work. I want to go as far as I can, to keep expanding by
getting better and better.”

Marc Brotherton’s studio practice includes both painting and drawing in a visual attempt to be responsive to his immediate surroundings during a time of rapid global change. Brotherton likes to explore many ideas, some of which are: process, new technology, communication, spontaneity, humor, politics, and design. Christopher Hart Chambers, writing for dArt International Magazine says, ”Brotherton’s works are what one might playfully term,‘Neo-Geo meets Punk Povera:’ Peter Halley plus Antoni Tàpies in hot pink and black on white.”
Brotherton exhibits his work in solo exhibitions, art fairs, art centers, and museums, nationally and locally on a regular basis. He is represented by Causey Contemporary Fine Art in New York City.

Brotherton received his MFA from Brooklyn College.
