“What strikes me viewing these 50 images is not just how fascinating it is
to see how photographic genius developed over the nearly century and a half portrayed here,
but how much each generation of photographers learned from and built on the legacies
of the pioneers who catapulted this new medium into the collective consciousness of the world.”
-Spencer Throckmorton

Throckmorton Fine Art (www.throckmorton-nyc.com) is presenting fifty vintage photographic images by the pioneering masters of the medium in a new show titled “VINTAGE MASTERS” to be presented at its New York gallery from November 19th through January 9th.
Gallery founder Spencer Throckmorton says this show has been curated to illustrate the nearly century and a half, from 1853 to 1996, when photographic innovation grew from its infancy to become one of the most important and impactful ways to express the human condition.
“No matter their age, location, education, political bent or social situation, the photographers featured in this show were all innovators, and they shared a commonality of vision. They coupled their innate talents and abilities with a keen observation of their peers and forebears in ways that helped the medium of photography skyrocket into our collective consciousness. It’s hard to imagine what the 20th century would have been like without these photographers.”

While Throckmorton Fine Art has earned a reputation over the past decades promoting contemporary photographic talents largely from Latin America, the “VINTAGE MASTERS” show includes iconic artists from Europe, the United States and South America, among them, EUGENE ATNET, BILL BRANDT, BRASSAI, LOLA ALVAREZ BRAVO, MANUEL ALVAREZ BRAVO, HENRI CARTIER BRESSON, MARILYN BRIDGES, ANTON BRUEHL, MARTIN CHAMBI, LUCIEN CLERGUE, CARLOTTA CORPRON, IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM, GEORGE DANIELI, HĖCTOR GARCIA, FLOR GARDUŇO, LAURA GILPIN, GUSTAVE LE GRAY, GRACIELA ITURBIDE, ANDREW KERTESZ, TEOBERT MAIER, LEO MATIZ, JAVIER SILVA MEINEL, TINA MODOTTI, RODRIGO MOYA, NICKOLAS MURAY, MARIO CRAVO NETO, LUIS GONZALEZ PALMA, COLETTE ORBAJTEL, EDWARD WESTON, and JEAN CLAUDE WHITE.

“Communications and the speed of innovation are so rapid today it is important for each generation to look back and view an entirely different era when those seeking to expose themselves to real innovation had to work hard to educate their eye. We are blessed that these vintage images have been preserved so that today’s collectors can see first-hand how the medium of fine art photography evolved and who was responsible for its genius.”

Throckmorton Fine Art is the premier dealer offering vintage and contemporary Latin American photography, Pre-Columbian art, Chinese jades and Tribal art. The gallery participates in internationally acclaimed fairs, including The Winter Antiques Show in New York each January, AIPAD and during March offers Chinese Jades during ASIA WEEK. The gallery’s commitment to connoisseurship is underscored by its sales to such major museums as The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, along with the Reina Sofia in Madrid.
