This event has ended.

Bowery Gallery announces Improvisation, a two-person exhibition presenting the watercolors of Phyllis Floyd and the ink drawings of Megan Williamson. While their work differs considerably in style and technique, both artists rely on a spontaneous approach to capture the observed. Both artists work directly and in the moment, without pencil or charcoal preparation. Employing mediums that preclude erasure, they proceed like trapeze artists without a safety net, or jazz musicians improvising solos.

Phyllis Floyd offers watercolors produced in her studio in Manhattan. Many of the works are window views that include the building construction which will soon obstruct her ability to see a cityscape; in a few months, her only view will be of the bedrooms of a dreary hotel. Others depict figures of family and friends who have sat for her over the past two years.

Megan Williamson’s landscape drawings, produced in Sumi ink on claycoat paper, will be exhibited as an ensemble for the first time. Because the paper has been screened with a fine coat of clay, the ink isn’t absorbed as one would expect. Executed on site, the drawings have a graphic, almost woodblock feeling. All the work was done in Chicago, where Ms. Williamson lives and works.
