Projekt722 presents Content Intent Replay curated by Eun Young Choi. The exhibition includes works by Ivin Ballen, Sun You, Jennifer Grimyser, and Jena H. Kim. The works on view share a crisp clean colorful aesthetic that investigates the act of looking and perceiving through spacial arrangements that are overlaid with humor and vague emotional narratives.
The artists use fairly humdrum objects, subject mater and even scraps to explore, manipulate and compose supernatural/natural interventions. In the process, the artists redefine symbolic meanings often associated with the material being used as well as push the dimensional boundaries of painting, sculpture and photography. These intentional edits can be seen as a reference to an act of looking back at what one might have experienced, to dissect and understand the different elements that compose our memory of that experience, and to create a sort of intentional synesthesia.
Ivin Ballen’s beautifully physical three-dimensional paintings successfully blur the line between the real and the simulacra, intrinsic value and painterly intent, as well as sculpture and painting. They are complex, insightful and humorous explorations of our relationships to everyday materials. On the other hand, Jena H. Kim uses the concept and the physical structure of a picture frame as a jumping off point to explore fictional dimensions and architecturally impossible spaces on a flat surface, creating a non-definable space or stage that seems to be waiting for some mysterious event that may or may not occur.
Jennifer Grimyser’s photographs explore image relationships by creating playful and deceptively handmade assemblages. Her elegant manipulation and layering reference the real versus the photographic, analog versus digital processes, as well as symbolic communication and emotional responses using humor as its medium. Similarly, Sun You’s almost ephemeral yet irrevocably bound assemblages investigate delightful visual relationships by manipulating delicate knick knacks such as paperclips and false eyelashes along with the immutable tendencies of the magnet to create wall sculptures that are imbued with emotional vulnerability.
Ivin Ballen is a Brooklyn based artist who earned his MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been exhibited at numerous venues including Blackston, Bunker259, The Wassaic Project, University of Texas at Dallas, Sarah Lawrence College, 1708 Gallery, Regina Rex, Allegra LaViola Gallery, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, Susanne Hilberry Gallery, Islip Museum, Winkleman Gallery, Schroeder Romero, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and Freight & Volume among others. His work has also been featured in Artforum, Village Voice, Art Review, The Brooklyn Rail, TimeOut New York, and most recently in Modern Painters.
Jena H. Kim was born in Busan, Korea and lives and works in New York City. Kim received her BFA from The Cooper Union and her MFA from Yale. Her work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, Cindy Rucker Gallery, Tenri Gallery, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York; Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles; Seoul Arts Center, Paik Hae Young Gallery and Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea. Recent solo exhibitions were held at Gallery HO in New York and Next Door Gallery in Seoul, Korea. Kim was the recipient of the 8th Korean Arts Foundation of America award and her residencies include Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program, Santa Fe Art Institute and the MMCA Chang dong International Artist Residency Program. Jennifer Grimyser was born in Milwaukee, WI and received a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Hunter College. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous exhibitions including Kunstverein Wolfsburg, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Lesley Heller Workspace, and Islip Art Museum. She has been awarded multiple studio residencies and fellowships and her work is a part of several collections including Walker Arts Center, Rhode Island School of Design, and Yale University. Jennifer Grimyser continues to work with photography, drawing, and book making in New York City.
Sun You is a New York based artist born in Seoul, Korea. You received her MFA from Wayne State University and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums internationally. Recent exhibition venues include Queens Museum, New York; The Korean Cultural Center, Berlin and New York; Kunstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral, Bad Ems; Seoul Arts Center, Seoul; Wagner College, New York and The Suburban, Chicago. You was an artist in residence at Atlantic Center for the Arts, Triangle Arts Association, and Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems, Germany. You also heads President Clinton Projects, a curatorial project founded in 2012.
Eun Young Choi is a New York-based installation artist and independent curator originally from Seoul, Korea. She holds a MFA from the School of Visual Arts and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Choi has organized exhibitions and performance events in collaboration with various organizations including the AHL Foundation, New Museum’s IDEAS CITY Festival, NARS Foundation, National Academy Museum, United Nations Headquarters, Asian American Art Centre and Arario Gallery New York. Her programming and exhibitions have been featured in the New York Times, New York magazine, VOGUE magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, artcritical and numerous other media outlets.
