ARTIFACTS: Rattles, Sylvia Netzer’s exhibition of small ceramic forms is a salute to her lifelong profession of teaching and an example of her whimsy and humor.

Seventeen years ago Netzer created the Miasma Morph Museum, an institution which celebrates science and art. At the first class meeting of each course Netzer teaches, she creates a ceramic piece that fits into the palm of one’s hand. Her students also create their own miniature works of art. Netzer is a full professor of ceramics and program head at City College of New York.
For many students making these sculptures is their favorite project! Fashioning them is foolproof. Each rattle is structured in such a step-by-step process that they can’t help but turn out very well. They are fun. They make noise!

With the Miasma Morph Museum Netzer invents a ‘provenance’ for these ‘artifacts’. Their open playful nature stimulates questions like where do they come from? Whay these colors and shapes? What other materials do they suggest—skin, fur, leaves? Who made these objects? It’s all for fun!!

Sylvia Netzer received an M.F.A. in sculpture from Columbia University School of the Arts. In addition to writing numerous pieces on glass and ceramic works, Netzer has been the subject of multiple publications, including In Three Dimensions: Women Sculptors of the ’90s by Charlotte Streifer-Rubenstein and Ceramics: Mastering the Craft by Richard Zakin. Netzer’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is held in several permanent collections including that of Sol LeWitt and Ursula Von Rydingsvard.
