This event has ended.

Friedman & Vallois presents the exhibition “Trajectories” by French and Guatemalan-Salvadoran artist Vladimir Montufar.

The exhibition highlights works produced entirely in 2014: sculptures, paintings and works on paper. As the title suggests, the artist depicts the trajectories of humankind.

The sculpture “History IV” refers to that of the human being who goes forth without knowing where he is going, with the intent to leave behind his remembrances. Yet this memory precisely carries him through towards the future.

“Tree of Life” and “The Descent “evoke the journey of man towards nature. This multi-headed piece points its finger towards the responsibility and the destruction of our natural environments and ultimately our potential demise. “The Descent” also describes the relationship of humans to nature. This journey over time places mankind on an irreversible descent announcing our own downfall or perhaps will there be a burst of saving grace? Furthermore, this multi-character work with a stop-motion of a falling figure also refers to ancient times - the monolithic giant statues or Moai of Easter Island.

“Man I”, for its part expresses the trajectory of the individual, as does “Sisters”, a serene portrait that pays homage to the famous painting at the Museum of the Louvre by the School of Fontainebleau “Gabrielle D’Estrées and one of her Sisters”. They could finally be one and the same person.

Finally the sculptures “Power I and II” elicit the question of the temporality of power and the context in which it operates. Power is symbolized by the posture: seated Chief demonstrates his authority to others who bow before him.
