This event has ended.

Greenpoint Terminal Gallery present Surprise Prize, a group exhibition with works by Caroline Wells Chandler, Nick Payne, and James Ulmer.

Caroline Wells Chandler was born and raised in Virginia Beach, Va and Texas. He completed his foundation studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and received his BFA cum laude from Southern Methodist University in 2007. He has shown at numerous institutions including: Art League Houston (TX), Zurcher Studio (NY), Anna Kustera (NY), Field Projects (NY), Vox Populi (PA), Sanctuary (PA), N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art (MI), Open Gallery (TN), and the Stieglitz Museum (‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands) among others. Chandler is a 2011 MFA recipient in painting at the Yale School of Art where he was awarded the Ralph Mayer Prize for proficiency in materials and techniques. His solo show, “The Best Little Whore House in Texas” is currently on view at Roberto Paradise in San Juan, PR.

Nick Payne was born in Toronto in 1982. He received a BFA in painting from Rhode Island in 2005. He has since primarily focussed on drawing and works on paper.
The subject matter in his drawings varies greatly but always walks the fine line between freaky and friendly. Nick currently lives and works in Hudson NY and has been showing his work at 247365 in NYC.

James Ulmer’s (b. Philadelphia) drawings may evoke memories of childhood innocence, though their complexity and precision belie the notions of simplicity or nostalgia. Beautifully and carefully made, they convey both his talents as a draftsman, and his understanding of how to convey emotion. Ulmer graduated from the University of the Arts in 2005 with a degree in Illustration and Design and was awarded the Thorton Oakly Medal by the Society of Illustrators. Ulmer was a member of the Philadelphia’s legendary Space 1026 Collective from 2008-2011. Ulmer recently had a drawing published in the New York Times. He has exhibited his work in New York, Austin, Texas, Los Angles, Baltimore, MD and Stockholm Sweden. James is currently living and working in Brooklyn.
