This event has ended.

Just as every journey begins with a single step, the artist Bayard’s intricate and labor- intensive sculptures begin with a single crocheted stitch. The journey to Answer: A Moustache, Bayard’s first exhibition at Luise Ross Gallery, consists of over 150 miles of yarn, and 135,000 meticulously counted stitches. Brightly colored and larger than life, these crocheted constructions fill the gallery. The outrageous and playful forms belie his manic and obsessive, calculated process. All rooted in mathematical configurations; the sculptures are reinterpretations and perversions of what is essentially a rectangle. Bayard offers a constraint of form and then challenges himself to find all the variations within it. This he does with aplomb.

The impact of these sculptures is immediate. The viewer is overwhelmed with the weirdness and whimsy of Bayard’s creations, which defy definition or specific interpretation. That ambiguity of meaning is central to the artist’s intention. As with any artist, his work is a manifestation of his obsessions. Bayard however offers them as a canvas for the fixations and preoccupations of the viewer. A sculptural Rorschach test, the meaning derived is as unique and varied as the individuals viewing it.
