“Messages You Must Return” presents visual artworks inspired by the lyrics of songs. The poetry of popular music has a massive scale. Cryptic, refined, harsh, or repetitive, lyrics have they power to recreate a specific place and time in each listener. They’re familiar, even memorized, and often connected to a cultural identity.
This multi-media group show repurposes lyrics in text and beyond. With a title borrowed from “Messenger” by Blonde Redhead, “Messages You Must Return” blends fine art, spoken/written word, and music seamlessly. Artists explore the topic of word, syntax and our emotional connection to language in physical form in an “homage to the lyrics that have haunted our hearts.”
