This event has ended.

Rosalie Marfuggi presents the first solo exhibition of emerging artist Jonas Adriaan Verheyen. Inherent Self will showcase a selection of photographs from the artist’s most recent series of the same title, debuting along with video and sculpture from the series.

Focusing on the introspective, emotional conflict within, I nherent Self is a series of expressive self portraits. Taken over a 9 month period of private performance pieces conducted in the artist’s studio, and drawing on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism and conceptual performance art, the works utilize performance, photography and painting as tools for psychological exploration.
Verheyen layers different colors of paint onto his body; pouring, investigating and removing each color to simultaneously reveal and cover himself in a process that allows the artist to grapple with his sense of self amidst an era of rampant, superficial self image and identification. With this series Verheyen displays a unique amalgamation of media, prompting a reflection on ourselves and identity within contemporary society.

Verheyen, originally from Belgium and now living and working in Colorado, is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia Pennsylvania where he completed a BFA in Photography. In 2013 a selection of Verheyen’s works were permanently installed at the 777 building in Philadelphia, PA. He received the see.me award for outstanding landscape photo (2013) as well as the Twenty20 award for best portrait which was featured in Twenty20 Magazine (2014). Notable exhibitions include Envisage, at Icebox Gallery, Philadelphia PA (2013).
