“Making Room: Cultural Production in Occupied Spaces” Exhibition

ABC No Rio

This event has ended.

This exhibition expands on the new book of the same name and examines the post-1968 squatting movement in Europe, focusing on creative production and cultural innovation.

In Making Room, “cultural production” appears in a variety of forms ranging from conventional art practices, to the organizing of communities and networks, to the production of media and setting up of information systems. Likewise, squats, occupations and social centers are figured as art projects themselves, housing and workspaces for artists, or, most significantly, constituent parts of an alternative infrastructure for the autonomous production of knowledge, discourse, and aesthetics.

Exhibition designed by Alan Smart and Jack Henrie Fisher. “Making Room” the anthology was edited by Alan W. Moore and Alan Smart; designed by Other Forms; and co-published by the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest and Other Forms.

Making Room includes the following public events:

ORAL HISTORY IN THE MAKING
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18 at 7:00pm
Sociologist and historian Amy Starecheski will stage a dialog with artists and activists of the New York City squatter movement. In telling their stories, the question-and-answer, call-and-response process of creating oral history will be played out for the audience, first as a performance and then as an open, reversible, participatory event as the interview subjects begin to ask questions of their own and the audience is invited to take part in the conversation.

CULTURE CLASS + CULTURAL PRODUCTION
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24 at 7:00pm
Martha Rosler in conversation with Alan Smart. Rosler will answer questions about her book Culture Class and discuss the relationships between urban space, politics and art production in New York City.

STREETOPIA
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25 at 7:00pm
Writer, artist and curator Erick Lyle will present the Streetopia project. Streetopia (the book) is an assemblage of works by current and former San Francisco artists associated with the Bay Area “Mission School” or “New Mission School” Art movements.
