This event has ended.

Bread and Water is an exhibition of Gabrielle D’Angelo’s paintings over the past two years. Collectively, these paintings represent a certain amount of work, the work of simple reproduction and maintenance of a practice over time. The work issues from the convergence of an intimate space, the body and imagination, and the social conditions of a shared studio.

Painted in oil and milk paint; shapes, patterns and voids structure the frame as lines and colors exist upon each other. The paint is precisely modeled and layered with variant opacities and weight. Although drawings are often a beginning, shifts in scale alter the compositions and as decisions accrue, greater distance is placed between the paintings and this origin. There is both planning and improvisation. It is in the spirit of unpredictable and rational movement from one step to the next that the work proceeds, light to dark.
