Jonathan LeVine Gallery presents Japanese Human Sensors, a group exhibition curated by Tokyo-based Gallery Kogure featuring works by Japanese artists Fuco Ueda, Takahiro Hirabayashi, Takato Yamamoto and Yuko Soi.

Fuko Ueda portrays the feeling of loneliness that exists within dreams and reality through paintings of floating illusions. In her depiction of innocent female characters surrounded by natures bounty you get a glimpse of the “deep psyche of the human mind.” Despite bursting with intimacy, there are sounds you can almost hear but can’t and things you can almost grasp but are out of reach.

Takahiro Hirayabayashi uses traditional Japanese painting techniques to depict modern women and show “the other side of people.” By using gold and silver foil as a foundation, his scenes featuring smiling young women elegantly radiate. While his subjects are bewitching from a glance, upon closer examination their haunting qualities start to emerge.

Takato Yamamoto has become known as the king of Japanese aesthetic expression in his depictions of human sexuality that explore themes such as bondage, metamorphosis, love and death. Coming from a calm and serene perspective, his goal it to create “images that transcend both sex and religion.”

Yuko Soi examines the relationships between people she witnesses and turns her impressions into brightly-colored dreamscape paintings. With a creative process that begins by sketching with finely sharpened color pencils, the result is work that has been described as representing “the joys of living.”
