Onishi Project presents H. Hugh Miller’s third solo show in New York City,Serenity in Snow: Scenes of Silent Beauty. In this exhibition of Miller’s most recent photographic exploration, we are exposed to expanses of the natural landscape captured in dreamy shades of blue, gray, white, and brown. Frozen snowscapes and lone structures are depicted with both minimalism and profundity, moving viewers to look deeply into misty, wistful horizons that blur earth and sky.
Two large images feature Miller’s wintry snow scenes and another two present landscapes sculpted by dark ice. The range of silent serenity as expressed in the natural landscape creates a range of emotional experiences for the viewers, as well. One finds solace in the calm quiet of a snow-blanketed field, a space in which the poetic imagination can wander alone. Alternately, the blue icy landscapes provoke visceral reactions, triggering memories in a search to find light in the shadows of these mysterious scenes. Uniting the work across the walls, however, is a shared language of visual poetics in which a single story is told—the story of an artist who encounters the unknowable, and treading lightly on new ground, captures a moment of vast beauty.
Hugh Miller is an American photographer who lives in the U.S. and France. He travels extensively and has previously exhibited in California, New York, Italy, and France. An active community follows his work in person and though social media. Following his last solo show at Onishi Project in 2014, Miller’s photographs traveled for a solo exhibition to Singapore.
